What started out as a 3-star book became a 2-star halfway through and a 1-star in the last 25% of it.Zander is 18 and showed up in Riverwolf Pass to learn about his past. He's been a loner for 4 years. In town, he meets Chad who's friendless and quiet about an event 6 months ago, Victoria who throws herself at any guy who wants her, and Sarah who is new to town. It's quite obvious that a female wrote this based on how Zander feels and behaves towards females.
Chad though, is quite stereotypical and just grows worse. It's quite irritating how possessive he becomes..
The four decide to go in the woods to look for a missing boy, whose body is worth $20,000.
The random hookups and behaviour changes, as well as some oddities past chapter 10 that just went to extreme weird drove this book down. It had some real potential at first.
Also, after chapter 10, there were some typos:
Page 96 - "I warned" instead of 'Chad warned.'
Page 111 - "higher their percentage" instead of 'raised their percentage'
Page 113 - "my fathers throat" instead of "father's"

Sly Darkness Kya Aliana 9781468043822 Books Reviews
I won a copy of this book and start reading it now in my Vacation.
The style and start of the book grabbed me right away and I had hard times putting it down. Kya managed to give the reader the chance to get easy into the book and keep interested by not giving away a lot of the story right from the start but really let it evolve in front of your eyes.
She provides a great atmosphere and as a reader you are caught in the actions almost as if you are right there.
Two downsides for me the one was all the sexual activities between teenagers, what I consider complete BS (not that teenagers do not have sex but the passion and romantic in my opinion only comes later in life) and the other was the appearance of a new character in the middle of the book, without good reason that got killed pretty much right away. It was a bit irritating.
Unfortunately - in my opinion - on one point Kya lost track of her own story and the story got really weird and quite unexpected. Fortunately only over a few pages after she found back to her exciting mystery style without bringing up Vampires all off a sudden.
At the end of the book I read that Kya is only 17 or was as she wrote this novel and for that reason I will give her extra credit. For her age it is a extremely well written, exciting story with a few twists and turns! Hope she will keep on her journey and I am sure we can expect more fantastic stories.
Thanks!
"Sly Darkness" tells the story of a horror-filled expedition of four teenagers through a woods with an evil reputation to find a lost boy in order to collect a $20,000 reward. The viewpoint character is Zander, a lonely drifter who has come to the small North Carolina town of Riverwolf Pass with a mysterious purpose. Very reserved, with only rudimentary social skills, Zander meets and ultimately befriends three teens of his own age Chad, a sometimes amiable and sometimes contentious high school athlete with a chauvinistic attitude toward women; Vikki, an intelligent girl whose poor self-esteem and need for acceptance leads her to behave like a slut; and Sarah, a sweet and attractive girl who was psychologically damaged by a gristly event in her family's hidden past. Zander looks at the world with the eyes of an outsider and has a hard time feeling affection for or trusting others. His point of view is existential in some respects. While the way he views the world is self-consistent and makes sense to him, he comes off as weird and alienated to the reader. In time his good traits, such as his penchant to support the underdog and his respect for women as equals, counterbalance the misgivings I felt for him, and I came to think of him as a reliable and right-minded protagonist.
Zander takes on the leadership role as the foursome gathers supplies and sets off on its ill omened quest. The deeper they proceed into the woods, the more ominous things get. The fluctuating emotions and shifting loyalties of the foursome are true to their personalities and are handled masterfully by author Kya Aliana,. While Chad claims "dibs" on Sarah, he initiates a sexual liaison with Vikki, who is only too happy to become his nighttime partner. Meanwhile an affair slowly blossoms between Zander and Sarah. Zander is very slow to emerge from his existential shell although he is strongly sexually attracted to her, and he comes to have feelings for her that we sense are as close as he can get to love. A great deal of trouble ensues when Chad asserts his "rights" with Sarah, and Sarah, instead of rejecting him as he deserves, starts flirting with him in a manner that tests Zander's patience. Tensions between the foursome escalate as the days pass and the food supply diminishes. Then they come upon the dead and mutilated body of Hector, the lost boy who is the object of their search.
At this point, supernatural events start happening. One of Zander's peculiarities from the start is his vision of "followers" that he sees pursuing him strange fluttering phantom moths that no one else can see. Sarah, after she and Zander have sexually consummated their relationship, feels secure enough to challenge him about the reality of the phantom moths. The almost violent reaction that she elicits frightens her and introduces for the first time doubts in her mind about Zander's mental stability. Things get increasingly weird and unsettling as they carry the corrupted and foul smelling corpse of Hector back to civilization to collect the reward. As they realize that they are lost in the woods and the food supply comes to an end, all hell breaks loose. I will not spoil the story by revealing the many twists and shocking surprises that lie in wait. "Sly Darkness" becomes a true page turner in the tradition of the established masters of the horror genre.
While "Sly Darkness" is aimed at a late teen and young adult audience, the sophistication of the characters and their complex interactions, the ever-mounting suspense, and the shocking and unexpected denouement make this a very entertaining and engaging book for an older audience as well. The fact that Kya Aliana wrote this book at the age of 15 is a testimony to her precocious talents as a fiction writer. I look forward to reading the amazing books that will surely proceed from the pen of this gifted young author.
I Just finished "Sly Darkness" by Kya Aliana. What a Great book! I was not expecting the ending to be what it was. Oh, I knew something was up ... but not that. I Loved it! Reveiw by, Denise Aslin
This amazingly talented young author already has the handle she needs to write a thriller. This is a wild ride of a paranormal ,psychological thriller with a twist at the end. Love this authors work!!
