Hugo, Earl of Ruven, is sailing home after ten years in India, where he served with his regiment. His grandfather, the old Earl, has died and Hugo has inherited the title and estate of Castle Ruven. "Castle of Love" by Barbara Cartland reads wonderfully well for most of the book. The heroine was stronger than some of her other heroines have been. The hero was a curious blend of strong will, compassion, and graciousness. The story has a villain that plays off the other characters in the story well in the beginning but is unbelievable by the end. The amount of evil and insanity he portrays makes a reader wonder why he hasn't been killed be someone a long time ago.Product details

If you want erotica go elsewhere. These romances are sweet, in a time period that was very different. Barbara Cartland's romances were my first foray into the genre at the age of 12. And sometimes you just want to put our world on hold and escape into an innocent but satisfying read. I am not saying I would like this all the time. But for an occasional jaunt, it is refreshing.
I love Barbara Cartland. Now that everything is being converted to digital, I can get rid of my paperback collection. I love the feature on my kindle that allows me to submit typo and formatting errors to help improve the copy for future buyers.
When the Earl returns home from India he learns that his grandfather and brother has died and he has inherited the Castle Ruven. Hugo's brother had promised himself to Felice de Lisle and and of course Hugo feels he must marry her. The problem is that he has become blind while in battle. Jacina and her father, who happens to be a doctor wait for Hugo's arrival at the castle and this is where we discover that the Earl is Jacina's childhood hero. She immediately knows when she see Hugo that she loves him and wants to helps him through his despair so that he may find happiness again. What happens next can only be described as unreal; b/c the arrival of Felice de Lisle, Jacina and Hugo are put thrown into a world of lies. I won't spoil the rest of the story but honesty and goodness always win!
I love the historical background Barbara gives to all her books. Since I am of scottish lintage this one was partically interesting to me.
